George's Biography
1999 - 2000 Vice-Convenor Arts & Recreation committee
2000 - 2003 Vice-Convenor Education & Leisure committee
2003 - 2007 Member of Education & Leisure committee
Member of Environment & Infrastructure committee
I represent the Labour Group on various Boards and Trusts. I am Vice-Chair of Aberdeen Performing Arts, which is the Board established to look after His Majesty’s Theatre and the Music Hall; Member of the Lemon Tree Board; and Member of the 3Rs Board, which is overseeing the PPP investment in schools across the city.
Since being elected in 1999 my priority has always been dealing with local issues and representing the views of Hilton residents. The issues most frequently brought to my attention concern housing, housing repairs, dog mess and other environmental matters, trees, pavements, roads and traffic.
I am a member of the Hilton & Woodside Neighbourhood Networks. The Woodside Network is very active group and takes an interest in the many issues affecting the area – Regeneration in particular. I am also a member of the Project Board which has been set up to establish a council Customer Access Point and improved facilities at the Woodside Community Centre on Marquis Road. The Woodside Network has enabled me to meet representatives of Woodside Community Centre, Fersands & Fountain Community Project, Printfield Community Project, the Auld Woodside Action Group and other key individuals who take an interest in their community and want to make it a better place to live.
Through the Hilton Neighbourhood Network I have helped organise two community Galas in 2005 and 2006. We are currently planning the 2007 event. The Network is exploring ways to improve and revitalise Stewart Park and is consulting residents on potential improvements to the Woodies. In recent months we have formed a new management committee at Hilton Community Centre through which we hope to encourage more residents of all ages to become involved in activities in our area. In January 2007 our first Adult Education class began at the Centre - Digital Photography - with International Cookery and Aromatherapy classes commencing in February.
I help produce and edit ‘Hilton Happenings’ our new local community newsletter that is funded from the Hilton Ward budget and has proved to be popular with local residents.
